I made a rear bumper for my truck about 2 years ago, and
it had everything I wanted: protection, tire carrier, and gas can
holder. It works great, but it is too heavy for me. I didn't think it
would be that big of a deal when I made it and for the first year it
didn't bother me. After we bought our home, we had to haul a lot of big
items in the truck, so I removed the bumper and canopy for a few months.
Only then did I realize how much weight those two pieces added to my
truck.
The new bumper will not have a tire or gas carrier, it will just be a
bumper. This new bumper will be a lot lighter!
Here are some progress photos:

bed had to be removed so i could box in the frame
had to add supports for the tailgate, because the hinges are only
supported by sheetmetal
stock frame. I need to box in the frame to give it strength
